Chapter 005: Playing with Feelings

***

The very next day, Fuwa Yozora received Geto Suguru’s file.

Currently a student at Tokyo Jujutsu High, a school with a religious bent. Parents are regular white-collar workers; he seems to come from a chill, peaceful family. Back in middle school, he was a total big man on campus—guy definitely knew how to throw hands.

Elite height, sharp features with high tension. He’s been popular with the girls since middle school, but has zero dating history.

Source: Geto Suguru’s middle school classmates.

Yozora pinched the bridge of her nose. What even is this? Did they really need to be this detailed?

She needed to pay this boy a visit. After all, ever since she met him, her dad’s lifespan had synced up with his. It was unsettling... and low-key intriguing.

Tokyo Jujutsu High covered the grounds of several temples. Usually, devout followers would go there to offer incense and vibe out in the peaceful atmosphere. However, the school itself was totally gatekept from the public—no visitors allowed.

Yozora called out of school today. Early in the morning, she asked Tomizawa Tenmei to take her "to pray."

The prayer was a front, and Tenmei knew exactly what the young mistress was up to. As expected of the Sanyai-gumi heiress—she moves fast!

"Are you going to see that Geto Suguru kid, Miss?"

"Yeah. I have some questions for him."

"Ah... Jujutsu High students are all high-potential sorcerers. But their future career path is super dangerous. Honestly, it’s even higher stakes than the mafia."

Tenmei spoke objectively. He’d had a panicked talk with his boss about this yesterday, but the boss was surprisingly chill. He figured his daughter wasn't going there for romance, but probably just to learn more about the Curses.

But Tenmei had a weird gut feeling. He’d seen the way that boy looked at her. It wasn't exactly "monk-like"; there was a deep, dark current beneath the surface.

Tenmei basically viewed Yozora as his own niece, so he was naturally worried. While he was overthinking, Yozora asked calmly:

"Uncle Tenmei, can you see Curses too?"

Tenmei blinked. His boss had said yesterday that some things didn't need to be hidden anymore.

"Yes, Miss."

"What are they, exactly?"

"To put it simply, they're monsters born from the negative energy humans leak. Weak ones just mess with your luck, but the strong ones are straight-up killers."

Yozora’s eyes flickered. She touched the corner of her eye.

"That Geto Suguru guy... he sees them too?"

"Of course. Jujutsu High only recruits kids with major potential... are you really that interested in him, Miss?"

The only thing she was interested in was the number on his head.

"Did the school decline our visit?"

"Yeah, Jujutsu High keeps a really low profile."

Yozora rested her chin on her hand, looking out the window. The mountain scenery where the school sat was gorgeous; the summer heat felt softer here, creating a very zen vibe.

"Got it. I’ll sneak in later. Uncle Tenmei, stay outside and be my getaway driver."

Tenmei looked pained. "Actually, I can't get in either. There's a barrier."

"The thing they mentioned?"

"Exactly. The Jujutsu High barrier stops any unfamiliar Cursed Energy from entering. Since you're a 'civilian' with no energy, you should be able to walk right through."

Normally, such a risky move would be shut down. But Tenmei stayed calm. Their mistress wasn't basic; she never did anything without a plan. Plus, Jujutsu High wouldn't hurt a normal person.

The temple abbot received Yozora politely. She bowed devoutly, offered incense, and then asked for a quiet place to rest and read some sutras.

Nothing unusual there. Temples always welcome big-spending pilgrims.

This temple shared a wall with the school. The two-meter-high wall looked intimidating, but Yozora was wearing a light green casual set today, looking like a forest elf blending into the greenery.

Even her outfit was tactical—light and move-ready.

She took a few steps back, her pale violet eyes shimmering in the summer light. She took a sprinting start and, like a butterfly, lightly kicked off the wall for momentum, vaulting right over.

Tenmei checked his surroundings. Seeing no one, he quietly went back to the guest room to help the mistress "copy sutras."

---

Yozora was a bit surprised. This "mysterious" place was easier to enter than she thought. It probably wasn't designed to keep out people like her, but rather "Curses" and "Sorcerers."

The buildings here weren't as grand as the temple, but they were quiet and elegant. Hard to imagine this was a high school. After walking for five minutes past little bridges and flowing water, she hadn't seen a soul.

It was massive. Even the Sanyai-gumi couldn't get a map of this place. The security level was like a royal palace—actually, even harder to crack.

Just as Yozora stopped to think, a lazy, gentle voice rang out.

"Are you a transfer student? Your face is new."

Yozora followed the voice and saw a pretty girl in dark shorts and a T-shirt. Her short brown hair was neatly trimmed, and her brown eyes looked friendly. She looked exhausted, with dark circles she couldn't hide, but the beauty mark under her eye gave her a chic vibe.

Judging by her tone, she was either a student or a teacher.

"Hello. I'm looking for someone."

"Ah... who are you looking for?"

Ieiri Shoko was on her way back to the dorms from the medical building when she bumped into this gorgeous girl. With her ink-black hair flowing past her waist, she looked like a classic beauty from a storybook. Her stunning eyes made Shoko think of her trash-tier classmate, Gojo Satoru—he had flashy eyes too.

The words out of the girl's mouth, however, were a shocker.

"Geto Suguru. Do you know him, by any chance?"

What a polite girl, Shoko thought. Totally different from my loud-mouthed classmates.

Wait, Geto Suguru?

Shoko’s eyes lit up as she looked at the girl. "You know Suguru?"

Yozora was smart. Hearing this girl call him by his first name meant they were close; otherwise, she would've used his last name.

Time to pull out the lies. Yozora flashed a totally innocent smile.

"Yeah, I'm his middle school classmate. I came to the temple with my family today and thought I'd drop by to see him. But he's not picking up his phone."

Shoko didn't have any guard up. To be fair, she could tell the girl was just a "monkey"—a normal person with zero Cursed Energy.

"I see. But how'd you get in?"

"Oh, just through a small side gate at the temple. I thought it was just another courtyard. Am I already inside the school?"

Shoko didn't doubt it. The campus was huge, and she was way too busy to keep track of every side gate.

The innocent sorcerer was being played like a fiddle by the mafia heiress.

"Suguru’s not answering because he’s probably out messing around with Satoru. No guarantee you'll find him, but I can take you to the classroom to check?"

Yozora gave a grateful smile. Under her mask, she had a charm that was impossible to hate.

"Thank you so much. I didn't get your name?"

"Ieiri Shoko. And you?"

"I'm Fuwa Yozora."

Shoko nodded, her mind already racing with gossip. Middle school classmate... childhood friend vibe! That jerk Suguru never mentioned he had such a pretty childhood friend.

Whatever, he's a trash-man anyway. He’s probably out there playing with this poor girl's feelings.
