Chapter 007: Deal, The Deposit

***

Geto Suguru needed Curses, and high-level ones gave him the best ROI.

The Curses this girl had attracted twice now were both semi-Grade 1 or higher. It could be a fluke, or it could be a pattern—Geto didn't actually know the logic behind it yet.

But ever since Gojo Satoru mastered "Reverse Cursed Technique"—that broken ability that could insta-heal damage—his already OP best friend had become straight-up invincible.

Hard work looks like a joke next to raw talent.

Special Grade sorcerer? My ass. He wasn't strong enough, and that’s why he was drowning in doubt and pain.

He needed power, especially right now. He needed the kind of strength that could actually change the world. He wasn't Gojo Satoru; he couldn't just get whatever he wanted.

Geto Suguru flashed a sly, dark smirk.

"What kind of deal?"

Fuwa Yozora felt a wave of relief. He’d taken the bait.

She had backup plans ready, but when dealing with a hot-blooded teenage guy, Plan A—dangling a power-up—was always the move. It went smoother than she expected, but she still didn't realize that his reasons for wanting power weren't exactly "heroic."

"I’ll be your bait for catching Curses, but in exchange, you have to help me figure out why they want to eat me so bad."

Geto Suguru covered his face, thinking this monkey was actually kind of cute.

"Just for that? Do you have any idea how lethal Curses are to regular people?"

"The Curses I’m after... even that sorcerer following you around might not be able to protect you, lol."

Geto’s words were pure danger, but Fuwa Yozora didn't flinch. She just nodded.

"I know. I’ll level up my own game too."

"..."

Geto Suguru started wheezing again, this time actually tearing up from laughing.

"How about we set the timeframe of this deal to your remaining lifespan? Want to know how long that is?"

"No thanks."

Fuwa Yozora was surprised, but Geto Suguru just said it like it was NBD.

"I’m not a fan of being defined by others."

She suddenly got it. This guy probably wasn't even serious about the deal. He was curious, and he had a use for her, so he just agreed on a whim without really being "all in."

But Fuwa Yozora was very all in.

Because she absolutely had to change her dad’s fate before that countdown hit zero. She didn't believe for a second that she was powerless to change those numbers. If they could fluctuate, they could be fixed.

"So, is the lady going to pay a deposit for this trade?"

"My name is Fuwa Yozora."

"..."

Geto Suguru’s lips curled. He’d officially logged her name. If she was a somewhat useful monkey, he could just kill her after he’d collected enough Curses. No biggie.

Fuwa Yozora pulled out her phone and dialed the number she’d already saved in her contacts.

Geto Suguru’s ringtone went off. He slowly pulled his phone from his pocket, looking at the unknown number.

"For the deposit, you want cash or a check?"

Geto Suguru felt like this summer burnout was becoming unbearable. He’d been on the verge of a mental breakdown multiple times, hiding it perfectly from his best friend, but it was pure agony.

He hadn't been this happy in ages. The irony? A monkey was the one making him laugh.

A pretty, interesting monkey.

He laughed out loud again—he’d lost count of how many times he’d done that today.

"Obviously not money. I want Curses—"

"Let's go hunting, Miss Bait."

Fuwa Yozora went quiet for a moment before finally nodding.

"Got it. Send me the address. I need to go home and prep."

Geto Suguru stood up from the desk and walked over to her, looming over her.

Those dark gold eyes were backlit, radiating a seductive, dangerous vibe—like a demon handing out an invitation to the abyss.

He leaned down, his hot breath smelling of sandalwood, deep and intoxicating.

"Prep a steel pipe? That junk won't kill a Curse."

He was being total mock-tier and teasing her. Fuwa Yozora’s heart skipped a beat, and then Geto reached out and grabbed her wrist.

It felt like he could snap it if he tried even a little. It was a weirdly unsettling thought.

Fuwa Yozora knew he was testing her, or maybe trying to scare her off. Instead of pulling away, she grabbed his wrist back, her gaze steady.

Her fingers were cool and soft, and strangely enough, they felt kind of soothing. Actually insane.

"I only have two hours today, otherwise my family will come looking for me."

Geto Suguru still didn't know who Fuwa Yozora actually was. To him, all monkeys were the same—irrelevant.

"Oh, you mean that sorcerer following you?"

"Yeah. He's basically family."

"Well, that depends on how well you perform, Miss—"

Geto Suguru tightened his grip and pulled her out of the room. As they passed the window of the classroom next door, Ieiri Shoko and Gojo Satoru’s eyes practically popped out of their heads.

"Suguru, where are you going?!"

Geto Suguru didn't stop. He had a smirk on his face and seemed to be in a legit good mood. Gojo Satoru wasn't sure if he was tripping, but he hadn't seen Geto smile like that from the heart in a long time.

"Just going to settle some things with this acquaintance."

"She is a childhood friend! Suguru, you big fat liar!"

Geto Suguru glanced back at Fuwa Yozora. She didn't look guilty at all.

He turned his head and smiled at his classmates through the window, emphasizing his words on purpose.

"Yeah, 'childhood friend.' Gotta take good care of her."

Fuwa Yozora frowned, looking at the tall silhouette dragging her along. She had a feeling he didn't mean that in a nice way.

Once they were completely gone from the hallway, Ieiri Shoko, looking shook, pulled a pack of cigarettes out and put one between her lips.

"Damn. Suguru really is more popular than Satoru. Always has been since elementary school."

Gojo Satoru tilted his head and gave Shoko a blindingly bright smile.

"Shoko-chan, I’m telling teacher you’re smoking in class again."

"What are you, a literal kindergartner?"

Ieiri Shoko felt annoyed but didn't light the cigarette yet. She waited until she walked out of the classroom to flick her lighter.

She gave Gojo a quick heads-up as she left.

"Don't be a weirdo and follow Suguru. Fuwa is just an ordinary person; don't go scaring her to death."

"Huh? Suguru’s Curses are the ones that’ll scare her to death, not me."

Ieiri Shoko waved him off, done with the convo.

Gojo Satoru leaned back lazily in his chair, his sky-blue eyes flashing behind his sunglasses.

An ordinary person?

Something felt kinda sus.
