Chapter 008: Limit, Pulling Strings

***

Geto Suguru didn’t keep dragging her for long; he let go the second they hit the stairwell.

He walked ahead all lazy, while Fuwa Yozora followed, looking extra cautious. The open space in front of the classroom block was half-covered in tree shade, while the other half was getting absolutely roasted by the scorching sun, making Fuwa Yozora squint.

Geto Suguru raised his hand into a sign, and suddenly, a gust of wind kicked up around them.

Fuwa Yozora felt a chill—the same vibe she got whenever those things called Curses showed up. But she couldn't see a single thing.

Geto Suguru summoned a white, bird-shaped Curse. This one wasn't exactly the aggressive type, but the second it clocked Fuwa Yozora, it started acting up. Since he was linked to the Curse’s mind, that intense hunger—like it was looking at a five-star gourmet meal—was transmitted straight to him.

Even Geto subconsciously swallowed hard, cutting a side-eye glance at the girl with the snowy skin and ink-black hair.

A tasty snack.

Geto Suguru gave a self-deprecating laugh and instantly crushed the Curse’s desire. Usually, sitting inside this Curse’s mouth was the move, but he decided to skip that today. I mean, who knows if Curses drool?

"Did a Curse... show up?"

Fuwa Yozora watched Geto Suguru, who was just standing there lost in thought. She had no clue what this guy was actually planning.

"Has Miss Bait ever been on a plane?"

What kind of question was that? Fuwa Yozora nodded.

"I have."

"Oh, good."

It sounded like he cared, but only barely.

Geto Suguru grabbed Fuwa Yozora’s wrist again, but this time was different. With a sudden burst of strength, he swung her upward into the air.

She quickly adjusted her posture mid-air, her violet eyes full of confusion and alert—with a hint of "are you for real" mixed in.

A second later, she realized she was standing on thin air. The texture under her feet was a bit squishy, but visually, she was just floating.

"Is the thing under my feet... the Curse?"

Geto Suguru shrugged, then casually stepped onto the air to level up with her.

"Yep."

This was Fuwa Yozora’s first real taste of "Cursed Spirit Manipulation"—the ability to actually make those cruel, man-eating monsters obey. Too bad things you can't see with the naked eye still make you feel uneasy.

Geto Suguru sat down casually. He looked up at the stiffly standing Fuwa Yozora against the sunlight, smirking deviously.

"Better sit down, or you might go flying in a sec."

"I'm fine—"

Before she could finish, Fuwa Yozora felt the soft object under her feet tense up, and then she was launched toward the sky at a crazy speed.

The shrinking school buildings, the track field... eventually the entire Jujutsu High campus. With nothing blocking her view, the impact was huge.

Fuwa Yozora’s legs gave out, and she sank into a kneeling position on the Curse. Her back was covered in cold sweat, and she had to lock her eyes onto Geto Suguru’s face just to deal with the terror of being surrounded by nothingness.

Her eyes were stubborn, and her clenched fists showed how stressed she was, but she took a deep breath and sat up straight.

Interesting.

Geto Suguru was basically vibing, half-lying on the Curse. Once you hit a certain altitude, it wasn't even that hot anymore; the wind hitting his face felt amazing.

Fuwa Yozora’s loose hair whipped around in the wind, giving off a fragile, shattered vibe.

"Miss Bait is way tougher than I thought."

That wasn't even shade; it was Geto Suguru’s legit opinion.

Fuwa Yozora looked away, trying her best to take in the scenery below and pretending she was just on a sightseeing tour.

"Where are we going?"

"To a place where a powerful Curse is likely to spawn."

Fuwa Yozora was quiet for a bit before turning back to Geto Suguru. The boy, who had been fake-napping with his eyes closed, sharply opened them. Those fox-like eyes were full of amusement.

"Got a problem?"

Fuwa Yozora sucked it up and answered.

"Can you give me a weapon for self-defense?"

Geto Suguru burst out laughing.

"Scared? But you can't even see them."

"If I focus enough, I might land a hit. Are you worried I'll use it to attack you? I won't."

Solid reverse psychology coming from a monkey.

Geto Suguru’s expression darkened slightly, but he fell for it. He pulled a long tachi out of thin air—it looked heavy—and tossed it in front of Fuwa Yozora.

To a girl, a weapon with such a heavy, murderous aura should have been a struggle to even lift with one hand.

Before Geto Suguru could even start mocking her, Fuwa Yozora’s eyes lit up, and she snatched up the sword. She unsheathed a bit of the blade, revealing a high-quality silver weapon hidden inside the plain-looking scabbard.

"It's a good blade."

"..."

Geto Suguru thought this monkey was actually built different.

Watching her sit there effortlessly unsheathing the whole thing and even giving it a few test swings in the air made him go even more silent.

Fuwa Yozora’s anxious heart finally settled down now that she had a proper weapon. She even gave him a polite "thank you."

For some reason, Geto Suguru felt a weird sense of satisfaction. He laid all the way back on the Curse, watching the clouds and blue sky zoom past.

"Fuwa, you really are weird."

That was the first time Geto Suguru had called her by name.

Fuwa Yozora hugged the tachi. Having seen so much wild stuff today, she was feeling kind of numb.

"Why?"

Geto Suguru couldn't explain it. He just felt like he hadn't been this relaxed in a long time.

Receiving no answer, Fuwa Yozora didn't really care, just saying slowly:

"We've already left the city area."

"What’s wrong, Fuwa? Are you scared?"

Fuwa Yozora actually wasn't scared. After the last incident, her dad had bought a bunch of GPS tracking gadgets. He’d put one in her shoe sole before she left—with her permission, obviously.

This abnormal movement had probably already pinged Tomizawa Tenmei, but she’d set a two-hour limit, so the Sanye Group wouldn't move until then.

"They say Curses come from human negative emotions. Is there any proof for that?"

Hearing this, Geto Suguru looked at the endless blue sky, clouds reflecting in his dark gold eyes.

"Hospitals, schools, cemeteries... places with a lot of negative vibes have more Curses than other areas."

"But sorcerers don't produce Curses. Only ordinary people do."

Geto Suguru didn't know why he added that last part, like he was hinting at something.

Fuwa Yozora actually let out a tiny smile, calling out Geto Suguru’s real thoughts.

"Geto, do you have some kind of weird superiority complex?"

Geto Suguru turned his head, looking into those indifferent violet eyes.

Fuwa Yozora continued in a slow tone.

"Oh, it's not a superiority complex. You just hate ordinary people."

Geto Suguru let out a soft sigh and didn't answer.

He simply decided that in the future, he would use the highest level of ceremony to kill this monkey, just to show his respect. Otherwise, he couldn't explain these messy thoughts.

What the hell were these feelings he was having toward a monkey?
